May Is Best Month Ever For BMW GROUP

  • More Than 100,000 Vehicles Sold In First Five Months
  • May Sales Up 17 Percent; Year-to-Date Sales up 17 Percent

WOODCLIFF LAKE, NEW JERSEY - May was the best month ever recorded in the U.S. as the BMW Group (BMW and MINI brands combined) reported unparalleled sales of 23,624, a 17 percent increase over the 20,231 vehicles reported a year ago. The extraordinary monthly sales helped push year-to-date sales over the 100,000-vehicle mark as the BMW Group reported year-to-date sales of 102,010 vehicles, an increase of 17 percent over the 87,007 vehicles sold in the same period a year ago.

Sales of BMW's 2002 BMW 7 Series models were up more than 53 percent over last year, with 8,888 automobiles sold year-to-date, underscoring strong customer reception to the all-new sedan.

BMW Brand

BMW of North America, LLC reported strong May sales of 21,828, an 8 percent increase over the 20,231 in the same month in 2001. Year-to-date sales of 97,868 were up 12.5 percent compared to 87,007 vehicles sold in the first five months of 2001.

BMW Automobile Sales

BMW also reported May automobile sales of 18,081 compared to 17,113 a year ago, an increase of 5.7 percent. The company also reported year-to-date automobile sales of 80,039 automobiles, a jump 12 percent compared to 71,520 in May 2001.

BMW Sports Activity Vehicle Sales

Year-to-date sales of BMW's X5 Sports Activity Vehicles increased 15 percent, with 17,829 vehicles reported compared to 15,487 in the first five months of 2001. Monthly SAV sales were up 20 percent, to 3,747 vehicles compared to the 3,118 reported last year.

BMW Certified Pre-owned Vehicles Sales

BMW also continued its record-breaking pace in the Certified Pre-owned sector, reporting the best sales month ever. The company reported sales of 5,413 vehicles in May, up 58 percent over the 3,416 vehicles sold last May. Year-to-date, BMW has sold 24,077 CPO vehicles, 50 percent ahead of the 15,934 sold in the first five months of 2001.

MINI Brand

MINI Automobiles

The company reported sales of 1,796 (1,365 MINI Coopers and 431 MINI Cooper S') MINIs in May. Year-to-date, the company reported combined sales of 4,142 MINIs. MINI automobiles went on sale March 22, marking the return of the MINI brand to the US for the first time in 35 years.
