Two BMW Plants Receive Top Awards In J.D. POWER 2002 Initial Quality Study

• BMW Plant in Rosslyn, South Africa Takes Gold Award
• Munich Plant Receives Silver Award

WOODCLIFF LAKE, NJ - Two BMW manufacturing plants received the two highest awards in the European region from J.D. Power and Associates earlier this year, recognizing Initial Quality for cars produced for the U.S. market.

The BMW manufacturing plant in Rosslyn, South Africa received a Gold Award while the manufacturing plant in Munich received a Silver award.

The 2002 Initial Quality Study is based on responses from almost 65,000 purchasers and lessees of new 2002 model-year cars and trucks surveyed after 90 days of ownership. The 16-year-old study is considered the industry benchmark for new-vehicle quality. Industry initial quality stands at an average 133 problems per 100 vehicles (133 PP100), a 14 PP100 improvement over 2001.

The J.D. Power awards were based on 85 PP100 recorded for the Rosslyn plant and 87 PP100 noted for the Munich plant. These levels are lower than all other North American and European manufacturing plants.

325i sedans sold in the U.S. are manufactured in Rosslyn, while BMW 325i and 330i sedans sold in the U.S. are produced in the Munich plant.

"These top awards demonstrate our commitment to manufacture the best possible products," said Tom Purves, Chairman and CEO of BMW (US) Holding Corp. "We are pleased that our customers have given these products such high marks."
