According to the Group Chairman, "all brands and thus the Group as a whole will benefit from the new lean structures." He said the new organization was in line with the objective of independent management in both brand groups in future and would optimize their capacity to act and their proximity to customers as well as speeding up processes. The Group Board of Management, scaled down to six persons, would in future assume strategic leadership and undertake the Group-wide/cross-brand management of various operational focus areas. Prof. Dr. Martin Winterkorn and Dr. Wolfgang Bernhard are responsible for the operating business of both core brands and the coordination of the two brand groups. Hans Dieter Pötsch remains responsible for Group-wide finance. Francisco Javier Garcia Sanz will continue to have operational responsibility for global procurement throughout the Group. According to the Group Chairman, "given the many synergies in the Group, separating responsibility by brands or brand groups would only weaken this function." Dr. Peter Hartz remains responsible for Group-wide Human Resources. Group development activities will be controlled by Dr. Pischetsrieder. Prof. Wilfried Bockelmann (63), at present member of the Volkswagen brand board of management responsible for "Technical Development", will hand over this responsibility to Dr. Bernhard on May 1, 2005 and coordinate Group development until his retirement at the end of this year. In this function, he will report direct to Dr. Pischetsrieder. At the second management level, a general manager will be responsible for the Group management functions in the Sales and Marketing, Production and Quality Assurance departments. Commenting on the future role of the Group, Pischetsrieder said: "A variety of focus areas still needs management by a single Group function, even if operational responsibility lies with the brands." Wherever possible, though, the Group management functions should be implemented at operational level in the Volkswagen and Audi brands to ensure lean structures. (April 21, 2005)
